Oswego's Eryn Stewart sends Lakers to NEWHL Championship Game

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Senior Eryn Stewart redirected a second period shot into goal and the Oswego State defense smothered the Morrisville State offense in a 1-0 shutout victory.  The win sends the Lakers to the Northeast Women's Hockey League Championship game against No. 1 Plattsburgh on Saturday.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score:  Oswego 1, Morrisville 0
  • Location:  Marano Campus Center Arena - Oswego, N.Y.
  • Records:  Oswego 16-6-4 | Morrisville 12-13-1

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a scoreless first period that saw each team have a few quality chances, Oswego led in shots-on-goal, 10-8.
  • In the second period, the Lakers increased their pressure and drew three penalties in the period.
  • On their first power-play attempt, junior Philomena Teggart took a pass up high from freshman Megan Teachout and fired a shot on goal.
  • Stewart found the shot and redirected it from its path down and left to the high right open corner for the opening goal at 6:12 of the period.
  • A minute later, in the Laker offensive zone, a contested puck took a weird bounce from the back of the net right out front to freshman Kyleigh Grugin.
  • She settled the puck and squirted it under the Morrisville goalie for what appeared to be a second goal.
  • After a referee's conference, it was ruled that Grugin played the initial contact of the puck with a high stick and the goal was taken off the board.
  • In all, Oswego outshot the Mustangs 21-3 in the second period to grab control.
  • Teachout led all players with 11 shots-on-goal through two periods while junior Amber Thomas was 14-of-15 in faceoffs.
  • The third period kicked off with some excitement as senior Kate Randazzo entered the Mustang's zone and fired a shot that rang the side pipe and kicked out.
  • Morrisville gathered up the puck and fired a long pass out to catch Oswego on a change and get to a one-on-one with senior Rachael Farmer.
  • Farmer came up with the save to maintain the 1-0 lead for the Green and Gold.
  • The Mustangs turned up the pressure of the Lakers in the third with an 11-3 shots-on-goal advantage, but Farmer made some huge saves to preserve the shutout.
  • Farmer made 22 saves in the contest while senior Madison Byrne led Oswego with four blocked shots.
