Oswego edges Canton 2-1; closes out season as #2 seed in NEWHL playoffs

Canton, NY – Lily Cullen scored her fourth goal of the season to give the Roos a second period lead but visiting Oswego State netted a pair of third period tallies to earn a 2-1 Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) win in the regular finale for both teams on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Neither team found the back of the net in the opening period as the Roos outshot the Lakers, 13-8.
  • Canton struck first at 7:39 of the opening period. Caeley Smith fed a cross-ice pass from the left point to Micayla Macintyre on her right. Macintyre found Cullen just inside the right circle as she redirected the puck past Oswego goaltender Rachael Farmer. Meaghan Best also proved crucial on the scoring play as she screened Farmer out in front.
  • Oswego tied the game at one at 5:05 of the third period. Megan Teachout fired a shot through traffic from the left point that finished top shelf. Avery Webster and Morgan Shines picked up helpers on the play.
  • Bailey Thomas scored the eventual game-winner on an unassisted goal from the point.
  • Brooke Susac made 18 saves in her final collegiate game, while Farmer turned aside 18 shots for the visitors.
