Plattsburgh wraps up regular season with 8-2 win vs. Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. — No. 1 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey capped off an undefeated Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) regular season with an 8-2 win over Morrisville State on Saturday at the Morrisville State IcePlex.

Plattsburgh State (24-1-0, 18-0-0 NEWHL), which earned the No. 1 seed in the NEWHL Tournament for the third consecutive season, hosts fourth-seeded SUNY Cortland in the NEWHL Tournament semifinals at a time yet to be determined on Saturday, Feb. 29. Morrisville State (12-12-1, 9-8-1 NEWHL) is the No. 3 seed in the NEWHL Tournament and will play at No. 2 seed Oswego State on Saturday, Feb. 29.

Junior forward and alternate captain Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) and sophomore forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) each scored twice, while freshman forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks), junior forward Abby Brush (Mount Prospect, Ill./Chicago Young Americans), sophomore forward Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./ Northern Cyclones) and junior defenseman Maggie Blair (Wallace, N.C./University of Maine) each added one goal.

In the first period of play, Plattsburgh State jumped out to a 3-1 lead.

Katonka got the scoring started with her first goal of the game, assisted by junior defenseman Emma Killeen (Watertown, Conn./The Gunnery), at 3:12 of the first period. 

Unsworth made the score 2-0 with a power-play goal at 10:16 of the first period. Sophomore defenseman Hanna Rose (Chaumont, N.Y./ Northwood School) and Killeen garnered the assists.

Unsworth then scored her second goal of the game — her 15th of the season — to push the Plattsburgh State lead to 3-0 at 18:19 of the first period. Sophomore forward Taylor Whitney (Livonia, Mich./Little Caesars) and Boric garnered the assists.

With the first period winding down, Morrisville State's Kylie Cameron cut the Plattsburgh State lead to 3-1 with her sixth goal of the season. Kendra Johnston and Tessa Dobson tallied the assists on the goal that was scored at the 19:48 mark.

In the second period, each team scored once as Plattsburgh State led 4-2 going into the second intermission.

Katonka pushed the Cardinal lead to 4-1 with her second goal of the game and 19th of the season at 7:10 of the second period. Junior forward and team captain Madison Walker (Denver, Colo./Lansing Spartans) and senior forward Sarah Wolf (Fairport, N.Y./Boston Shamrocks Elite) assisted on the play.

The Mustangs scored the final goal of the second period. Maddison Devlin tallied her ninth goal of the season, assisted by Mackenzie Lombardi and Cameron, to make the score 4-2 at the 10:29 mark.

In the third period, Plattsburgh State pulled away from Morrisville State with four goals to complete the 8-2 victory.

Boric tallied her 10th goal of the season — a power-play goal — at 3:26 of the third period. Senior defenseman Hannah Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./Northern Cyclones) and Katonka recorded the assists on the goal that made the score 5-2.

A little over 11 minutes later, Brush scored her 11th goal of the season — assisted by Katonka and Krauseneck — to make the score 6-2 at the 14:55 mark.  

Less than a minute later, Krauseneck recorded her 18th goal of the season. Rose assisted on the goal that made the score 7-2 at 15:41 of the third period.

Blair capped off the scoring with her second goal of the season —assisted by Whitney — to make the score 8-2 with 46 seconds remaining in regulation.

Sophomore netminder Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./ Northwood School) improved to 17-0-0 on the season with 13 saves on the day. Lacey Friesen (7-4-0) stopped 38 shots in goal for Morrisville State.

Plattsburgh State held a 46-15 edge in shots on goal, including a 15-1 advantage in the third period as the Cardinals pulled away for the victory.

Plattsburgh State finished 2-of-2 on the power play, while holding Morrisville State to 0-of-4. Plattsburgh State's power play ranks third in NCAA Division III women's ice hockey at 27.6 percent. The Cardinals have the most-efficient penalty kill in NCAA Division III women's ice hockey at 97.9 percent.
