Plattsburgh cranks out 15th straight with 6-2 win vs. Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. — Five different Cardinals scored a goal as No. 1 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey skated past Morrisville State, 6-2, for its 15th consecutive win on Friday at the Morrisville State IcePlex.

Plattsburgh State (23-1-0, 17-0-0 Northeast Women's Hockey League) concludes the NEWHL regular season against Morrisville State (12-11-1, 9-7-1 NEWHL) tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Morrisville State IcePlex.

The Cardinals outshot the Mustangs, 14-4, in the first period, but each team scored once to send the game into the first intermission tied at 1-1.

Eighteen seconds into the game, Mackenzie Lombardi scored her 15th goal of the season, assisted by Madalyn Box, to put Plattsburgh State down 1-0.

However, junior forward Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) tied the game at 1-1 with her 10th goal of the season at 13:58 of the first period. Junior forward and team captain Madison Walker (Denver, Colo./Lansing Spartans) and senior forward Sarah Wolf (Fairport, N.Y./Boston Shamrocks Elite) assisted on the play.

In the second period, Plattsburgh State outscored Morrisville State, 3-1, to take a 4-2 lead into the second intermission.

Walker scored a shorthanded goal, assisted by sophomore forward Taylor Whitney (Livonia, Mich./Little Caesars) that gave Plattsburgh State a 2-1 lead. Walker's eighth goal of the season came 1:32 into the second period. 

Just under five minutes later, sophomore forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) tallied her 13th goal of the season — the game winner — to make the score 3-1 at 6:24 of the second period. Unsworth's goal was unassisted. 

At the 14:15 mark of the second period, Morrisville State's Maddison Devlin scored her eighth goal of the season — assisted by Lombardi — to cut the Plattsburgh State lead to 3-2.

However, Plattsburgh State would pull away by scoring the final three goals of the game to finish off the 6-2 victory. 

Junior forward and alternate captain Annie Katonka ( Pittsburgh, Pa./ Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) scored her 17th goal of the season at 18:30 of the second period. Sophomore forward Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./ Northern Cyclones) and senior defenseman Hannah Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./Northern Cyclones) assisted on the goal that increased the Cardinals' lead to 4-2. Kiraly's assist was her 20th of the season.

In the third period of play, freshman forward freshman forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) scored twice for Plattsburgh State to cap off the Cardinals' scoring.

Boric tallied her first goal of the afternoon at 4:34 of the third period to make the score 5-2. Unsworth and junior defenseman Emma Killeen (Watertown, Conn./The Gunnery) assisted on the goal. Boric then scored an unassisted goal, shorthanded, at 7:10 of the third period for her ninth goal of the season.

Sophomore netminder Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./ Northwood School) made 18 saves to improve to 16-0-0 on the season. Lacey Friesen (7-3-0) made 31 stops for Morrisville State.

Plattsburgh State held a 37-20 edge in shots on goal.

Neither team scored on the power play as Plattsburgh State was 0-of-2 and Morrisville State was 0-of-4. Plattsburgh State, which has the most successful penalty kill in NCAA Division III women's ice hockey at 97.8 percent, scored two shorthanded goals.
