Canton wins 4th straight, takes season series with 3-1 win vs. Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Three different players found the back of the net and Sirena Alvarez made 31 saves as the SUNY Canton women's hockey team won its fourth consecutive game earning a 3-1 road win at SUNY Potsdam in a Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) game on Wednesday evening.

With a 3-1 win tonight and a 4-3 OT win last Wednesday the Roos take the season series v. the Bears two games to one.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Ashley Gillies opened the scoring at the 11:09 mark of the first period on her fifth tally of the season. Caeley Smith and Sarah Kosnaskie assisted the score.
  • Breanna Bedborough produced her team-leading 17th point of the season on her seventh goal of the year at 2:49 of the second period to double the Canton lead. Alyssa Hein and reigning NEWHL Rookie of the Week Hannah Desrochers picked up helpers on the play.
  • Potsdam cut the Roos lead in half at 7:09 of the third period on her team-best 13th goal of the season.
  • The Bears called timeout with 1:38 remaining and pulled Alexa Pfeiffer for the extra skater. Alvarez made a pair of saves before Pfeiffer returned to goal with 39 seconds left. Just 11 seconds later Potsdam pulled her again.
  • With five seconds remaining Lily Cullen sealed the win with an empty-net goal. Micayla Macintyre earned an assist on the play.
  • Alvarez stopped 31 of the 32 shots she faced on the night, while Pfeiffer made 24 saves for the Bears.
