Wolf scores twice as #1 Plattsburgh blanks #4 Elmira 3-0 on Senior Day

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Senior forward Sarah Wolf scored a career-high two goals, including the game-winning goal, to help No. 1 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey to a 3-0 non-conference win over No. 4 Elmira College at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena Friday on Senior Night.

Plattsburgh State, which improved to 22-1-0 on the season and extended its winning streak to 14 games, wraps up the Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) regular season with a two-game series at Morrisville State on Friday, Feb. 21 (4 p.m.), and Saturday, Feb. 22 (2 p.m.). Elmira, which fell to 16-3-2, next plays a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game at William Smith College on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 4 p.m.

Prior to the start of the game, Plattsburgh State honored its three seniors: forward Sarah Wolf (Fairport, N.Y./Boston Shamrocks Elite), and defensemen Hannah Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./Northern Cyclones) and Jen Manning (Marlborough, Mass./Massachusetts Spitfires).

Wolf provided the Cardinals all of the offense they would need as she scored twice in the first period to give Plattsburgh State a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission. The two goals in the game were a career-high for Wolf.

Wolf's first goal, assisted by sophomore forward Hanna Rose (Chaumont, N.Y./Northwood School), was scored at the 5:48 mark. Wolf took a pass from Rose and skated to below the left face-off dot in the Plattsburgh State offensive zone, before scoring on a near-side wrist shot over the goaltender's right shoulder.

Less than five minutes later, Wolf struck again as she scored on a near-side wrist shot taken from below the right face-off dot that went in over the goaltender's left shoulder. Junior defenseman Emma Killeen (Watertown, Conn./The Gunnery) and freshman defenseman Kendall Wasik (Novi, Mich./HoneyBaked) assisted on Wolf's sixth goal of the season that came at 10:29 of the second period.

After neither team scored in the second period, sophomore forward Taylor Whitney (Livonia, Mich./Little Caesars) provided an insurance goal to make the score 3-0 at 10:21 of the third period. Whitney scored her 13th goal of the season on a wraparound at 10:21 of the third period. Sophomore forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) tallied her 17th assist of the season on the play.

Plattsburgh State's defense and sophomore netminder Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./Northwood School) (15-0-0) did the rest as they prevented Elmira from getting back into the game. The Cardinals limited the Soaring Eagles to eight shots on goal in the first period, six in the second period and three in the third period. Davis made 17 saves in the game to record her fifth shutout of 2019-20. Davis has the top winning percentage (1.000) in all of NCAA Division III women's ice hockey.

Elizabeth Hanson (9-1-1) made 28 saves in goal for Elmira.

Shots on goal were 31-17 in favor of Plattsburgh State.

Neither team converted on the power play with Plattsburgh State going 0-of-5 and Elmira finishing 0-of-4. Plattsburgh State has the No. 1 penalty kill in NCAA Division III women's ice hockey at 97.8 percent. Elmira is second at 95.1 percent.
