CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's ice hockey team jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one period in earning a 5-1 victory versus Canton Friday night in NEWHL action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 12-5-2 overall and 6-5-2 in the conference, while the Kangaroos fell to 3-13-1 and 0-11-1.

Senior Emily King (Buffalo/Buffalo Regals) paced Cortland with two goals. Sophomore Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Amherst Knights) recorded a goal and an assist, and freshmen Martha Dzienszewska (Old Bridge, NJ/New Jersey Colonials) and Elena Eichmann (Fairport/Syracuse Nationals) each netted a goal. Seniors Emily Rose (Chaumont/Syracuse Nationals), Allyson Edwards (Buffalo/Buffalo Regals) and Abbey Paduano (Massena/Massena H.S.) and juniors Olivia Wilburn (Stockton, CA/San Jose Sharks) and Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars) collected one assist apiece. Junior goalie Chelsea Allain (Malta/Canterbury School) made 15 saves.

Sophomore Sarah Kosnaskie (Ottawa, ON/Ottawa Jr. 67's) netted the goal for Canton with freshman Verity Lewis (Sandhurst, England/Ontario Hockey Academy) picking up an assist. Freshman Sirena Alvarez (Jyvaskyla, Finland) started in goal, making eight saves in 17:01 before giving way to senior Brooke Susac (Bowmanville, ON/Clarington Flames), who stopped 20 shots over the final 42:59.

The Red Dragons built their 4-0 lead in less than an eight-minute stretch in the opening 20 minutes. Dzienszewska started the run when she tapped in a shot at the left post at 9:16. King then scored on a wrist shot at 10:34 and added a power-play goal at 15:31. Eichmann made it a 4-0 score with her unassisted goal at 17:01.

Kosnaskie put the Kangaroos on the scoreboard at 7:59 of the second period, finishing off a long rush on the power play. Gaffney completed the scoring at 1:21 of the third period with a shot right in front on the left side for the 5-1 final.
