No. 1 Plattsburgh tops No. 2 Middlebury 4-1 for 10th consecutive win

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — No. 1 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey defeated No. 2 Middlebury College, 4-1, in non-conference play on Tuesday night at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh State (18-1-0) extended its winning streak to 10 games, while ending Middlebury's (10-1-2) seven-game winning streak. The Cardinals also evened the season series with the Panthers at one win apiece as they avenged a 2-1 loss from the championship game of the Panther/Cardinal Classic on Sunday, Dec. 1, in Middlebury, Vt.

After both teams fought for momentum early in the first period, Plattsburgh State took advantage of a power-play opportunity to take a 1-0 lead at the 9:48 mark. Freshman forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks), the reigning Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) Rookie of the Week, fired a pass from the bottom of the left circle across the front of the net where junior forward and alternate captain Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) tipped the puck to sophomore forward and NEWL Player of the Week Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich,/Northern Cyclones) on the back door. Krauseneck promptly finished into the upper part of the net for her team-leading 14th goal of the season. Katonka and Boric assisted on the play.

The scored remained 1-0 in favor of the Cardinals until the final minute of the first period when sophomore forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) scored her first of two goals on the night at 19:31. Junior defenseman Emma Killeen (Watertown, Conn./The Gunnery) sent the puck from the left point towards the front of the net. The puck bounced off a defenseman and then junior forward and team captain Madison Walker (Denver, Colo./Lansing Spartans) knocked the puck to the front of the net. Unsworth corralled the puck and finished for the goal to make the score 2-0. Walker and Killeen garnered the assists.

In the second period, Walker scored her sixth goal of the season at the 18:02 mark. After a couple of initial shots were stopped and with traffic in front of the net, Walker got to the loose puck in the slot and wired a wrist shot into the upper-right corner of the goal to increase the Cardinal lead to 3-0. Junior forward Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) and Boric recorded the assists.

Middlebury fought back and scored what turned out to be its lone goal of the night 52 seconds into the third period. With traffic in front of the net, Eva Hendrickson unleashed a slap shot from the high slot that glanced the inside of the left post as it went in for her first goal of the season. Madie Leidt and Sidney Portner garnered the assists.

However, Plattsburgh State's defense and sophomore Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./Northwood School), the reigning NEWHL Goalie of the Week, would not let the Panthers pull any closer. Davis made 21 saves on the night, including 11 in the third period, as she improved to 11-0-0 on the season.

After Middlebury pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker, Unsworth sealed the victory for Plattsburgh State with an empty-net goal that made the score 4-1 at 18:23 of the third period.

Lin Han (5-1-2) made 30 saves in goal for Middlebury.

Shots on goal were 34-22 in favor of Plattsburgh State.

Plattsburgh State went 1-of-2 on the power play and Middlebury finished 1-of-3.
