Plattsburgh beats Canton 5-1, claims ninth consecutive victory

CANTON, N.Y. — No. 1 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey lengthened its winning streak to nine games with a 5-1 Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) victory over SUNY Canton on Saturday evening at the Roos House.

With the victory, Plattsburgh State (17-1-0, 13-0-0 NEWHL) completed a sweep of its two-game home-and-home series with Canton (3-11-1, 0-9-1 NEWHL). The Cardinals, who won 9-1 at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena on Friday afternoon, outscored Canton 14-2 over the two-game series.

Plattsburgh State's junior forward and team captain Madison Walker (Denver, Colo./Lansing Spartans) scored the only goal of the first period as the Cardinals led 1-0 at the first intermission. Walker had an initial shot from in front of the net that was saved, but the rebound sat in the crease and Walker poked it into the net for her fifth goal of the season at the 7:34 mark. Junior forward Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) and sophomore forward Holly Schmelzer (East Amherst, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) tallied the assists.

In the second period, Plattsburgh State scored two more goals to take a 3-0 lead into the second intermission. Sophomore forward Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./Northern Cyclones) scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal to make the score 2-0 at the 7:46 mark. Junior forward and alternate captain Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) passed the puck from below the goal line to Krauseneck in the slot and Krauseneck unleashed a wrist shot that beat the goaltender high on the blocker-side. Katonka and senior defenseman Hannah Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./Northern Cyclones) garnered the assists on Krauseneck's 13th goal of 2019-20.

Junior forward Abby Brush (Mount Prospect, Ill./Chicago Young Americans) made the score 3-0 with her ninth goal of the season as she poked in a rebound from in front of the net at 17:29 of the second period. Krauseneck and Katonka recorded the assists.

Plattsburgh State outscored Canton, 2-1, in the third period to secure the 5-1 victory. Freshman forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) scored both goals for Plattsburgh State and now has seven goals during her rookie campaign. Boric's first goal came on the power play and increased the Plattsburgh State lead to 4-0 at the 5:15 mark. Junior defenseman Erin McArdle (Macomb, Mich./Belle Tire) passed the puck from near the top of the right circle to Boric by the left side of the net and Boric quickly finished before the goaltender could cover the side of the goal. McArdle and Krauseneck tallied the assists.

Canton scored its lone goal of the night at 14:21 of the third period. Breanna Bedborough played the puck from behind the goal line to the front of the net. Plattsburgh State's sophomore goaltender Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./Northwood School) (10-0-0) tried to poke the pass away, but the puck went to Meaghan Best in the slot and Best scored her first goal of the season with a wrist shot high on the blocker-side. Bedborough and Hannah Desrochers assisted on the play.

Boric then tallied her second goal at 17:06 of the third period to conclude the scoring and make the final score 5-1. Boric, sophomore forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) and sophomore forward Taylor Whitney (Livonia, Mich./Little Caesars) entered the zone on a 3-on-2 rush with some nice passing between Whitney and Boric, which got the goaltender out of position and led to a tap-in goal for Boric. Whitney and Unsworth were credited with the assists.

Davis made 11 saves as she remained undefeated on the season for Plattsburgh State. Brooke Susac (0-8-0) stopped 33 shots for Canton.

Shots on goal were 38-12 in favor of the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh State finished 1-of-4 on the power play and Canton was 0-of-3.
