Katonka eclipses 100 career points as Plattsburgh tops Canton 9-1

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Junior forward Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) reached 100 career points and sophomore forward Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./Northern Cyclones) garnered her first collegiate hat trick as No. 1 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey recorded a season-high goal total in a 9-1 win over SUNY Canton in Northeast Women's Hockey League play on Friday afternoon at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

Katonka became the 16th Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey player to tally 100 career points. Entering the game with 98 career points, Katonka assisted on the Cardinals' third and sixth goals of the game to reach the milestone. She also assisted on the Cardinals' eighth goal and now has 101 career points (55 goals, 46 assists).

After falling behind Canton (3-10-1, 0-8-1 NEWHL), 1-0, early in the game, Plattsburgh State (16-1-0, 12-0-0 NEWHL) scored nine unanswered goals to cruise to a 9-1 victory. The Cardinals scored four goals in the first period, four goals in the second period and one goal in the third period.

Canton took a 1-0 lead at 1:57 of the first period. Jordan Emerson took a slap shot from the left point that was redirected past Plattsburgh State's freshman goaltender Chloe Beaubien (Colorado Springs, Colo./Ontario Hockey Academy) (3-1-0) by Breanna Bedborough in the slot.

Plattsburgh State tied the game at 1-1 on junior defenseman Erin McArdle's (Macomb, Mich./Belle Tire) fourth goal of the season at 7:58 of the first period. McArdle scored on a slap shot from the left point with freshman forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) and sophomore forward Taylor Whitney (Livonia, Mich./Little Caesars) assisting on the play.

Krauseneck then scored her first goal of the night — the game winner — to make the score 2-1 at 10:22 of the first period with senior defenseman Hannah Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./Northern Cyclones) and Boric assisting. Kiraly took a slap shot that went wide to the left of the net, but the shot bounced off the end boards to Krauseneck by the right post and she scored before the goalie could cover the right side of the net.

Krauseneck then tallied her second goal of the afternoon to make the score 3-1 on the power play at 16:47 of the first period. After an offensive-zone face-off, junior forward Abby Brush (Mount Prospect, Ill./Chicago Young Americans) played the puck from the right circle to Katonka in the slot. Katonka then knocked the puck over to just outside the left side of the crease where Krauseneck corralled it and scored on a high wrist shot. Katonka's assist gave her 99 career points.

The Cardinals scored their final goal of the first period on the power play at 18:14 to make the score 4-1 when freshman defenseman Hanna Rose (Chaumont, N.Y./Northwood School) unleashed a slap shot from the blue line that found the upper-right corner of the net. Brush and junior defenseman Emma Killeen (Watertown, Conn./The Gunnery) garnered the assists.

In the second period, senior forward Sarah Wolf (Fairport, N.Y./Boston Shamrocks Elite) tallied her fourth goal of the season, assisted by junior forward Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) and junior forward and team captain Madison Walker (Denver, Colo./Lansing Spartans), at the 2:43 mark. The Cardinals had numbers on a rush and an initial shot from Walker went wide right, but the puck bounced behind the net to Drew-Mead. Drew-Mead poked the puck to Wolf in front of the goal and Wolf finished into a vacated net to make the score 5-1.

Brush then scored her first of two goals at 3:37 of the second period. After an initial shot was saved, Brush banged home a rebound to extend the Plattsburgh State lead to 6-1. McArdle and Katonka assisted on the play. The assist gave Katonka her 100th career point.

At 14:23 of the second period, Krauseneck completed her hat trick and lengthened the Cardinal lead to 7-1 with a power-play goal. McArdle took a slap shot from the blue line that was deflected by Krauseneck in the slot for the goal. Kiraly and Boric tallied the assists on Krauseneck's 12th goal of 2019-20.

Brush then made the score 8-1 with her second goal of the game and eighth of the season at 18:22 of the second period. After an initial shot by McArdle was saved, Brush scored on the rebound for Plattsburgh State. McArdle and Katonka assisted on the play.

Sophomore forward Holly Schmelzer (East Amherst, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) scored the final goal of the game to increase the Plattsburgh State lead to 9-1 at 13:22 of the first period. Schmelzer finished off a break to the net with a backhand shot to the goaltender's blocker-side. Freshmen forwards Tatem Cheney (Ottawa, Ontario/Ottawa Lady 67's) and Emma Faso (Clarence Center, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) assisted on the play. Faso's assist was the first point of her collegiate career.

Beaubien made 16 saves as she picked up the win for Plattsburgh State. Sirena Alvarez (3-3-1) started for Canton and was the goalie of record as she allowed six goals, while making 23 saves in 23:37 of play. Brooke Susac made 27 saves and allowed three goals in 36:23 played in relief of Alvarez.

Plattsburgh State held a 59-17 edge in shots on goal.

The Cardinals finished 3-of-8 on the power play while holding the Kangaroos to 0-of-4.
