OSWEGO, N.Y. — No. 1 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey remained undefeated in Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) play with a 3-1 victory over Oswego State on Wednesday night at the Marano Campus Center Arena. 

In the first period of play, Plattsburgh State (15-1-0, 11-0-0 NEWHL) outshot Oswego State (9-4-1, 6-3-1 NEWHL), 12-5, but each team scored once. Both teams had opportunities to take the lead later in the period, but the goaltenders made key saves and the game entered the first intermission tied at 1-1. 

Oswego State, which entered the game in second place behind Plattsburgh State in the NEWHL standings, got on the scoreboard first as Megan Teachout skated the puck into the right side of the Plattsburgh State defensive zone and took a wrist shot from the bottom of the right circle that went in over the shoulder of Plattsburgh State's sophomore goaltender Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./Northwood School) (9-0-0) at 5:20 of the first period. Teachout's seventh goal of the season was assisted by Aislinn McAleer. 

However, Plattsburgh State's sophomore forward Taylor Whitney (Livonia, Mich./Little Caesars) answered 32 seconds later with her 12th goal of the season at the 5:52 mark. Sophomore forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) took a shot from the right side of the slot that was initially saved by Oswego State's goaltender Rachael Farmer (8-4-1), but the puck trickled behind Farmer into the crease where Whitney knocked in the rebound. Freshman forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) tallied the secondary assist on the play. 

The game remained tied, 1-1, until the final minute of the second period when junior forward Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) tallied a power-play goal for her 98th career point at the 19:17 mark. Standing just outside the top of the crease, Katonka redirected a pass over the goaltender's left pad and inside the right post. Boric and senior defenseman Hannah Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./Northern Cyclones) tallied the assists.   

Early on in the third period, Davis made a key save as Oswego State had a 2-on-1 opportunity with just over 18:00 left in regulation. The Cardinals then extended their lead to 3-1 as Unsworth scored her seventh goal of the season at 11:11 of the third period. An initial shot from close range by Unsworth was stopped, but she was able to knock in the rebound for the goal. Boric tallied her third assist of the game on the play. Whitney garnered the secondary assist. Plattsburgh State did not allow Oswego State back into the game as the Cardinals held on for the 3-1 victory. 

Davis made 13 saves in goal for Plattsburgh State and Farmer stopped 34 shots for Oswego State.

Shots on goal were 37-14 in favor of Plattsburgh State. 

The Cardinals finished 1-of-7 on the power play and the Lakers were 0-of-4. 

The Cardinals next face NEWHL foe SUNY Canton in a home-and-home series this upcoming weekend. Plattsburgh State plays Canton at home on Friday, Jan. 17, at 3 p.m., before going on the road to face the Kangaroos at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18. Oswego State plays a NEWHL game at SUNY Cortland on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m.
