5 players score as Cardinals blank Buffalo St. 6-0

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Five different Cardinals scored as No. 1 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey skated past Buffalo State, 6-0, in Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) play on Saturday at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh State (14-1-0, 10-0-0 NEWHL) outshot Buffalo State (3-11-0, 1-6-0 NEWHL) 20-2 and had two power-play opportunities in the first period of play, but was unable to solve Buffalo State's goaltender Soleil Archambeau (2-1-0). The game remained scoreless going into the first intermission.

In the second period of play, Plattsburgh State broke through for four goals and took a 4-0 lead into the second intermission. 

Sophomore forward Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./Northern Cyclones) gave Plattsburgh State a 1-0 lead 22 seconds into the second period. Krauseneck took a pass from junior forward Abby Brush (Mount Prospect, Ill./Chicago Young Americans) in the slot and snapped a wrist shot into the upper-left corner of the net for her ninth goal of the season. 

One minute and five seconds later, sophomore forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) increased the Cardinals' lead to 2-0 with her first goal of the game at 1:27 of the second period. Unsworth circled from the left corner around the offensive zone before scoring on a sharp-angle wrist shot from the bottom of the right circle. Sophomore defenseman Sierra Benjamin (Palm Coast, Fla./Northwood School) tallied the lone assist on the play. 

Junior forward Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) made the score 3-0 with her 11th goal of 2019-20 at 7:02 of the second period. She scored with a wrist shot from the slot that found the upper-left corner of the net. Krauseneck and Brush garnered the assists.

In the final minute of play in the second period, sophomore forward Taylor Whitney (Livonia, Mich./Little Caesars) made the score 4-0 with her 11th goal of the season. After an initial shot by Unsworth was saved, Whitney knocked home the rebound at the 19:46 mark. 

The Cardinals added two more goals in the third period to secure the 6-0 victory. Unsworth tallied her second goal of the game and sixth of the season as she cut to the net with speed and used a deke to score at the 15:51 mark. The goal was unassisted.

Freshman forward Tatem Cheney (Ottawa, Ontario/Ottawa Lady 67's) finished the scoring with her first collegiate goal at 16:56 of the third period. Cheney skated the puck from the neutral zone into the slot before firing a wrist shot in off the crossbar for the goal. Sophomore forward Holly Schmelzer (East Amherst, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) and sophomore defenseman Hanna Rose (Chaumont, N.Y./Northwood School) recorded the assists. 

Plattsburgh State's sophomore netminder Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./Northwood School) stopped all 11 shots she faced to improve to 8-0-0 and earn her third shutout of the season. Archambeau made 45 saves for Buffalo State. 

Shots on goal were 51-11 in favor of Plattsburgh State.

Neither team converted on the power play with Plattsburgh State going 0-of-2 and Buffalo State finishing 0-of-3. 

Plattsburgh State next plays at NEWHL foe Oswego State on Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m. Buffalo State plays a NEWHL game at Morrisville State on Friday, Jan. 17, at 4 p.m.
