Schnorr scores twice, Cortland tames Alvernia 7-2

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's ice hockey team opened the second half of its season with a commanding 7-2 victory versus Alvernia Monday night at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 7-3-1 with the win, while the Golden Wolves dropped to 3-8.

Juniors  Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars) and  Olivia Wilburn (Stockton, CA/San Jose Sharks) and freshman  Dany Donegan (Cicero/Syracuse Nationals) each tallied three points to lead Cortland. Schnorr recorded two goals and one assist, Wilburn collected a career-best three assists and Donegan chipped in with one goal and two assists.

Junior  Kirsten MacDowell (Ottsville, PA/New Jersey Rockets) netted two goals, and freshmen  Jayden Kelley (East Berne/CP Dynamo) and  Monica Cahill (Oswego/Lysander Lightning) each scored her first career goal and added an assist for the Red Dragons. Senior  Emily Rose (Chaumont/Syracuse Nationals), junior  Katie DeVoe (Mississauga, ON/Vaughan Flames), sophomore  Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Amherst Knights) and freshman  Elena Eichmann (Fairport/Syracuse Nationals) picked up one assist apiece.

Sophomore goalie  Emily Steen (Windom, MN/Windom H.S.) improved her record to 3-0 on the season, making seven saves in 50:31 before giving way to sophomore Corinne Smith (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh H.S.), who stopped the four shots she faced over the final 9:29 in her first action as a Red Dragon.

Freshmen Amber Steinhilpert (Anchorage, AK/Anchorage Northstars) and Olivia Gilida (Littleton, CO/Team Colorado) each recorded a goal and an assist for Alvernia with freshman Abby Radcliffe (Waxhaw, NC/Carolina Jr. Hurricanes) registering two assists. Freshman goalie Isabelle Hovel (Alexandria, MN/Paire Centre) turned aside 47 shots.

Cortland opened up a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals from Schnorr and MacDowell, with MacDowell's shot from the point beating Hovel just before the horn. Kelley made it a 3-0 score just 1:15 into the second period with a wrist shot from the right circle. Steinhilpert put the Golden Wolves on the scoreboard on a deflection in front on the power play at 3:49 before Donegan closed the period with her seventh goal of the season when she knocked in a rebound.

Schnorr netted her team-high ninth goal of the season at 4:49 of the third period, but Gilida scored her team-best 11th goal of the season on the power play just 55 seconds later to make it a 5-2 score. MacDowell put Cortland ahead, 6-2, with a shot from the point at 6:42, and Cahill completed the scoring at 9:13 when her shot from the right point found its way past Hovel.
