UTICA, N.Y. – The Mustangs hit the road on Friday afternoon to face off against local rival, Utica College.  Morrisville exploded for six goals as they defeated the Pioneers 6-1 to pick up their first victory of the 2019-2020 season.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Morrisville 6, Utica 1 (by period:  Morrisville 2-2-2, Utica 0-0-1)
  • Location:  Utica, N.Y.

 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The host Pioneers and the visiting Mustangs were even with shots for the first half of the first period, but all that would change at 16:51 when Kylie Cameron (Burlington, Ont.) notched her first goal of the season with an unassisted tally.
  • Just over a minute later, at 17:55, Cameron slipped a pass from behind the net to line-mate Mackenzie Lombardi (Hamilton, Ont.) who cut down the middle to pick up the pass and find the back of the net.
  • Up 2-0, the Mustangs continued to dominate offensively in the second period.  Cameron picked up her second goal of the contest thanks to quick passing, starting with Chyne Kennedy (Southwold, Ont.) who passed up the boards to Maddison Devlin (Campbell River, B.C.) who in turn hit Cameron in the middle for the shot.
  • Morrisville struck again at the 12:03 mark in the second.  Isabella Moskonas (Greenfield, Wisc.) picked off the puck and pushed ahead to Tessa Dobson (Moose Factory, Ont.) who along with Kendra Johnston (St. Albert, Alta.) broke free for a 2 v 2 opportunity.  Dobson hit Johnston from the left and Johnston took care of the rest to give the Mustangs the 4-0 lead.
  • Despite the hefty advantage, the Mustangs were forced into play more defensively in the third, weathering two power play opportunities for the Pioneers nearly back to back with Morrisville penalties at the 7:37 and 10:16 marks.
  • After coming out unscathed, Morrisville went back to work offensively.  Moskonas once again picked the puck as the trio of Cameron, Lombardi, and Devlin broke free for a 3 v 1 break.  Devlin received the Moskonas pass and found Lombardi who went top right for the score.
  • The only blemish for the Mustangs occurred at the 15:24 mark when Utica was able to score, but the tally was quickly forgotten when Lombardi scored her third of the game just twelve seconds later.  Devlin and Cameron picked up the assists.
  • Sissy Harman (Eden, N.Y.) picked up her first collegiate win between the pipes, recording 12 saves.

WHAT'S NEXT

  • Morrisville returns to Northeast Women's Hockey League action on Wednesday with a 7 PM faceoff against the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons.
