Cortland tops Canton 3-1 behind DeVoe's twin goals

CANTON, N.Y. – Katie DeVoe (Mississauga, ON/Vaughan Flames) scored twice, including the game tiebreaking goal late in the second period, as Cortland remained unbeaten with a 3-1 win at SUNY Canton in NEWHL play.

Cortland (3-0, 3-0 NEWHL) opened the scoring just 55 seconds into the game on a slapshot from the right point by Kirsten MacDowell (Ottsville, PA/New Jersey Rockets) off assists from Elena Eichmann (Fairport/Syracuse Nationals) and Emily King (Buffalo/Buffalo Regals).

Canton tied the game 6:08 into the second when Ashley Gillies converted a centering pass in front of the net. Debi Bartosova and Natasha Simioni earned assists on the play.

DeVoe gave Cortland the lead with 29 seconds left in the second when she knocked home a rebound. Molly McCabe (Webster/Webster Thomas H.S. Boys) and Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars) notched assists on the play. DeVoe netted an insurance goal for the Red Dragons with 1:23 remaining in the game. McCabe sent a pass from the defensive zone to Quinn Metcalfe (Churchville/Rochester Monarchs), who sent the puck to DeVoe up the left side. DeVoe beat a defender, quickly knocked down a loose puck with her hand and sent a low shot into the left side of the goal.

Chelsea Allain (Malta/Canterbury School) finished with 14 saves for Cortland. Canton's Brooke Susac made 22 saves, including 11 in the third period.

Cortland will play at Potsdam Saturday at 3 p.m. in a NEWHL contest.
