PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Junior forward Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) posted a career-high four points on three goals and an assist, helping the No. 1 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team down Oswego State, 7-1, in Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) action at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena on Friday. With the victory, the Cardinals tied Gustavus Adolphus College (Dec. 13, 2011-Nov. 8, 2013) for the longest home winning streak in NCAA Division III history (28), which began on Dec. 1, 2017, against SUNY Potsdam.
 
It marks the second career hat trick for Drew-Mead, who scored a natural hat trick in the first period against Amherst College on Feb. 2, 2019.
 
Plattsburgh State rises to 4-0-0 overall (3-0-0 NEWHL) with the victory and stretches its winning streak to 22, while Oswego falls to 2-1-0 overall (0-1-0 NEWHL) with the loss. The two teams will finish out the series tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
 
After taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, the Cardinals erupted for six goals in the second period to take a commanding 7-0 advantage. Oswego erased the shutout bid at 18:15 of the third.
 
Plattsburgh State finished with a 46-11 edge in shots on goal, including a 39-3 margin in the first two periods of play. The Cardinals were 2-for-6 on the power play, while the Lakers were 0-for-3 with the extra skater.
 
Sophomore forward Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./Northern Cyclones), junior forward Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) and junior defenseman Erin McArdle (Macomb, Mich./Belle Tire) each had a goal and an assist for the Cardinals, while senior defenseman Hannah Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./Northern Cyclones) and junior forward Abby Brush (Mount Prospect, Ill./Chicago Young Americans) each notched two assists.
 
Drew-Mead opened scoring at 10:30 of the first period. Brush dug the puck out along the back wall to sophomore forward Holly Schmelzer (East Amherst, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles), and Schmelzer passed out in front to Drew-Mead, who one-timed the puck past the Oswego netminder high glove side from the low slot.
 
Krauseneck tallied just 34 seconds into the second period to stake Plattsburgh State to a 2-0 lead. Kiraly wrapped the puck along the boards in the Cardinals' zone to Krauseneck, and Krauseneck banked a pass off the boards ahead to Katonka. Katonka walked into the Lakers' zone and briefly lost the handle before Krauseneck sent a knuckled shot past the goalie low stick side.
 
Drew-Mead registered her second goal of the game at 2:48 of the second. McArdle fired a slap shot from the right point that was turned away with a pad save before Drew-Mead banged in the rebound.
 
McArdle scored on the power play with 9:00 gone in the second to hand the Cardinals a 4-0 advantage. Krauseneck played a pass back to Kiraly in the high slot, and Kiraly took a shot that was saved. McArdle threw the rebound attempt back toward the goal from the left circle, and the puck squirted through the legs of the Oswego goalie past the goal line.
 
Junior forward Maggie Blair (Wallace, N.C./University of Maine) picked up her first goal in a Cardinal uniform with 14:46 elapsed in the second. Drew-Mead led Plattsburgh State on the rush down the right wing, and she centered a pass to Blair that deflected off her skate and into the back of the net. Blair posted one goal during her tenure competing for NCAA Division I University of Maine.
 
Katonka scored less than a minute later, tallying at 15:29 of the second. Brush passed back to freshman defenseman Kendall Wasik (Novi, Mich./Honeybaked) on the left point, and Wasik rifled a shot that was saved before Katonka poked in the rebound.
 
Drew-Mead completed the hat trick with a power-play goal at 18:40 of the second. Sophomore defenseman Sierra Benjamin (Palm Coast, Fla./Northwood School) sent a cross-ice pass to freshman forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks), and Boric got a piece of the puck before Drew-Mead backhanded a shot past the Oswego goalie.
 
Sophomore defenseman Avery Webster helped Oswego avoid a shutout at 18:15 of the third. Webster sent a pass ahead along the left boards that was ultimately turned back by a Cardinal skater, and Webster corralled the puck along the blue line in the defensive zone. Webster then ripped a slap shot from the top of the left circle that beat the goalie high glove side.
 
In her first collegiate start, freshman goaltender Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) made 10 saves to earn her first collegiate win (1-0-0), while Oswego's two goalies combined to make 39 saves. Senior goaltender Rachael Farmer (2-1-0) shouldered the loss, making 30 saves against six goals allowed in 35:29 of action.
