Red Dragons tame Bears 5-2, start season 2-0

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Five different players scored goals as the Cortland women's ice hockey team defeated Potsdam, 5-2, in NEWHL action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while the Bears fell to 1-1 and 1-1.

Junior Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars), sophomore Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Amherst Knights) and freshman Dany Donegan (Cicero/Syracuse Nationals) each tallied one goal and one assist for Cortland. Sophomore Quinn Metcalfe (Churchville/Rochester Monarchs) and freshman Elena Eichmann (Fairport/Syracuse Nationals) added a goal, and six different players recorded one assist. Junior goalie Chelsea Allain (Malta/Canterbury School) registered 19 saves.

Senior Miranda Kolb (Watertown/SUNY Cortland) and sophomore Keira Thacker (Oakville, ON/Hamilton Hawks) netted Potsdam's goals. Senior Shelbi Thacker (Chesterfield, MI/Honeybaked) and junior Natalie Wasielewski (Carnegie, PA/Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) each collected an assist. Senior goalie Kayla McCabe (Watertown/Syracuse Nationals) made 32 saves.

After a scoreless first period, the Red Dragons outscored the Bears, 4-1 in the second 20 minutes of action. Potsdam pulled to within 4-2 at 5:07 of the third period, but Eichmann made it a 5-2 game just 18 seconds later. Potsdam pulled McCabe for an extra skater with 1:16 remaining but could not create any chances.
