#1 Plattsburgh extends streak to 20 with 8-0 win

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Five different Cardinals scored as No. 1 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey completed a two-game Northeastern Women's Hockey League series sweep of Buffalo State with an 8-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Ice Arena.  
                                          
With the victory, Plattsburgh State (2-0-0, 2-0-0 NEWHL) extended its winning streak to 20 games. In addition, 17th-year head coach Kevin Houle improved his career coaching record to 399-50-25. The Cardinals next face No. 9 Norwich University for a non-conference game at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. Prior to facing the Cadets, Plattsburgh State will unveil its 2018-19 NCAA Division III national championship banner. Buffalo State (0-2-0) next plays at SUNY Potsdam on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.
 
Plattsburgh State scored three goals in the first period to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. Sophomore forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal on the power play at the 2:34 mark. Unsworth skated in on the net and used a deke to score her first goal of the season.
 
Then at the 11:40 mark, sophomore forward Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./Northern Cyclones) banged in a rebound for her second goal of the season after an initial shot by junior forward Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) was stopped. Katonka and freshman forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) assisted on the play that made the score 2-0.
 
In the final minute of the first period, Boric tallied her first collegiate goal at the 19:20 mark. Katonka played the puck from below the goal line to Krauseneck, who was to the left of the right face-off dot. Krauseneck chipped the puck towards the front of the Buffalo State net where Boric used the shaft of her stick to knock the puck out of the air and into the net. Krauseneck and Katonka assisted on the goal.
 
In the second period, the Cardinals scored four more goals as their lead swelled to 7-0. Sophomore forward Taylor Whitney (Livonia, Mich./Little Caesars) scored her first goal of the day to make the score 4-0 at the 10:26 mark. Junior forward and team captain Madison Walker (Denver, Colo./Lansing Spartans) brought the puck into the Buffalo State zone and took a wrist shot that was stopped by the goaltender. However, Whitney got the rebound and quickly released a wrist shot for the goal. Walker and Unsworth assisted on the play.
 
Boric then made the score 5-0 with her second goal of the game at 12:04 of the second period. She scored on a close-range wrist shot taken from the bottom of the left circle. Krauseneck tallied her second assist of the day on the play.
 
Plattsburgh State's sixth goal of the day came at 16:38 of the second period. Junior defenseman Erin McArdle (Macomb, Mich./Belle Tire) got the puck behind the Cardinal net and played it ahead to junior Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons), who skated the puck into the right side of the zone and scored with a close-range wrist shot from the right circle for her first goal of the season.
 
Just 10 second later, Krauseneck tallied her second goal of the day and her third of the season to make the score 7-0 at 16:48 of the second period. Krauseneck forced a turnover in the Buffalo State zone and skated in on the goaltender before finishing with a wrist shot.
 
The final goal of the game was scored at 15:20 of the third period. Unsworth skated the puck through the slot to the left of the goaltender, who moved to her right to try and stop Unsworth. However, Unsworth slide a pass back across the front of the net to Whitney, who redirected the pass into the goal for her second goal of the game and her fourth of the season.

Sophomore netminder Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./Northwood School) (2-0-0) started the game and made 11 saves in two periods of play to earn the victory for Plattsburgh State. Freshman Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif/Anaheim Lady Ducks) made nine saves as she played the final period of the game. Bri Gawronski (0-2-0) made 42 stops in net for Buffalo State.

The Cardinals finished 1-of-6 on the power play and Buffalo State went 0-of-2.
