Cortland edges Potsdam in NEWHL Semifinals

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Junior Emily King (Buffalo/Buffalo Regals) recorded two goals and an assist and sophomore goalie Chelsea Allain (Saratoga/Canterbury School) made 33 saves to pace the Cortland women's ice hockey team to a 3-2 win in a NEWHL semi-final game at Potsdam Saturday night. The win improves the Red Dragons to 15-8-3 overall and advances them to the NEWHL Championship game where they will play against nationally-ranked Plattsburgh State. The Bears drop to 9-14-3 with the loss.

Junior Allyson Edwards (Buffalo/Buffalo Regals) scored her second goal of the season for Cortland and junior Emily Rose (Clayton/Syracuse Nationals), sophomore Olivia Wilburn(Stockton, CA/San Jose Sharks U19) and freshman Quinn Metcalfe (Churchville/Rochester Monarchs U19) each recorded an assist.

Rylie Murray and Miranda  Kolb each recorded a goal and an assist and Delphine Léonard and Natalie Wasielewski each tallied an assist apiece for the Bears in the loss.

With the win, Allain sets the Cortland single-season record for wins with 10. Alexa Pfeiffer turned aside 13 shots and Samantha White made 11 saves for the Bears.

Edwards began the Red Dragons' scoring just 1:36 into the first period to give Cortland an early 1-0 lead. King extended the Cortland lead nearly two minutes into the second period on a power-play opportunity. Ten minutes later, with 8:36 remaining in the period, King scored her second goal of the period on another power-play opportunity to give Cortland a 3-0 lead.

Murray scored the Bears' first goal of the night with 3:49 remaining in the third period. Just over a minute later, Kolb netted Potsdam's second goal to cut the deficit to a single goal. Potsdam outshot Cortland 14-10 in the third period and pulled its goalie for the final 1:38 of regulation, but couldn't score the game-tying goal.

Cortland will play for the NEWHL Championship on Saturday, March 2nd against Plattsburgh, who defeated Oswego 7-1 earlier in the day. That game will be played at Plattsburgh and is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
