Cummings, Wilburn lead Cortland by Canton 2-1

CANTON, N.Y. – Sophomore defensemen Katelinn Cummings (Johnson City/Northwood School) and Olivia Wilburn (Stockton, CA/San Jose Sharks U19AAA) scored their first career goals as Cortland defeated host Canton, 2-1, in a women's ice hockey non-conference game. The Red Dragons (7-5-3) won their fifth straight contest and are unbeaten in their last six outings. Canton, which was 5-2-1 in its previous eight games, fell to 7-6-3 with the loss.

Cortland sophomore goalie Chelsea Allain (Saratoga/Canterbury School) made 16 saves for the victory. Canton netminder Brooke Susac finished with 19 saves.

Canton took a 1-0 lead 7:13 into the game on Breanna Bedborough's sixth goal of the season, assisted by Kaylah Menchaca and Hannah Brady. Cortland tied the game 9:07 into the second on a goal by Cummings, assisted by Emily King (Buffalo/Buffalo Regals) and Quinn Metcalfe (Churchville/Rochester Monarchs U19AAA). King made a centering pass from the right side while falling to the ice that Cummings redirected past Susac.

The Red Dragons scored on the power play with 1:35 left in the second off a Wilburn slapshot from the left side after a long diagonal pass from Grace Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars U19AAA) from the right corner. Katy Kennedy (East Greenbush/Troy-Albany Ice Cats) also earned an assist on the play.

Each team killed off a penalty during the scoreless third period. Cortland finished 1-for-2 and the Kangaroos were 0-for-1 on power play chances. Canton pulled Susac for the final 1:04 but was unable to knot the game.

Cortland will host nationally second-ranked Plattsburgh in a pair of Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) games on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 18-19. Each game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
