Bertin, Banas lead Bears past Mustangs, 2-1

POTSDAM, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (4-2-1) completed the comeback against Morrisville State (5-1-1) with a 2-1 victory over the Mustangs Friday night at Maxcy Ice Arena. Senior captain Anna-Rose Bertin (Marathon, Ontario/CIH Academy) and freshman forward Allie Banas (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) each scored for the Bears, while junior defenseman Riley Murray (Berkley, Mich./Honeybaked) picked up an assist. Sophomore goalie Alexa Pfeiffer (Sylvania, Ohio/Little Caesar's) finished with a season-high 36 saves.

A strong defensive stance from both teams resulted in a scoreless first period. Morrisville put up 14 shots on Pfeiffer, while the Mustangs' freshman goalie Karoline Arvik (Trondheim, Norway/HTI Stars) stopped all six of Potsdam's shots.

Morrisville got on the board first less than five minutes into the second period following a faceoff. A pass from sophomore forward Maddison Devlin (Campbell River, Bristish Columbia/Pacific Steelers) was sent to the point where junior defenseman Kimberly Hughes (Lloydminster, Alberta/PWM Steelers) fired a shot that found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. At the 13:39 mark, the Bears tied it up with a goal from Bertin. Murray picked up the puck in her own zone along the boards and found Bertin at center ice. Bertin was one-on-one with Hughes down the right side of the Mustangs' zone and managed it get a shot off that went over Arvik right shoulder for her third goal of the season. The teams were tied going into the final intermission.

Half way through the third period, Morrisville picked up a penalty that awarded the Bears a power play opportunity. After three shots and three saves from Arvik, Potsdam found the lead with an unassisted goal from Banas. Bertin picked up the puck at the point and moved into the slot for a shot, but it was deflected by a Mustang to the boards. Banas picked it up and skated around the back of the net and saw an opening in the front and wristed in passed Arvik for her first career goal. Morrisville pulled Arvik with 1:20 remaining, but Potsdam's defense held them off and took the 2-1 victory.

Arvik stopped 17 shots in the loss.

The Mustangs held the advantage in shots, 37-19. Potsdam was 1-for-3 on the power play, while Morrisville finished 0-for-2.

The teams will complete the double-header weekend at Morrisville tomorrow at 1 p.m.
