Plattsburgh's Kassi Abbott is a face in the SI crowd

NEW YORK – Senior goaltender Kassi Abbott (Medford, Mass./Boston Shamrocks Elite) of the Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team will be featured in Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd" section in the publication's issue that will hit newsstands on Thursday.

Abbott is just the fourth Cardinal women's ice hockey student-athlete to be featured in "Faces in the Crowd," joining Melissa Sheeran (2017), Camille Leonard (2017) and Sydney Aveson (2014).

"Faces in the Crowd" spotlights six amateur athletes and has been a fixture of the weekly magazine since first appearing in 1956.

Abbott backstopped the Cardinals to their fifth national championship in six years and their seventh title overall last month, posting a 29-save shutout in a 4-0 win over Hamline University in the championship game of the NCAA Division III Tournament. It marked just the second shutout in the history of the tournament's championship game and the first posted by a Plattsburgh State netminder in that contest.

She finished her career as NCAA Division III's all-time save percentage leader (.950) in addition to setting the career program record in goals-against average (0.95). Her 1758:46 played established a single-season program record, as she was on the ice for all but 101:59 of the team's 1860:45 throughout the course of the season. Abbott finished the year leading Division III in goals-against average (0.78), save percentage (.956), winning percentage (.935) and shutouts (14). As a result of her success this season, she was named an American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA)/CCM First-Team All-American and the Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) Co-Goalie of the Year in addition to be selected to the NCAA Tournament's All-Tournament Team.
