Plattsburgh’s Courtney Moriarty named NEWHL Player of the Year

SYRACUSE, NY – Plattsburgh senior forward Courtney Moriarty (Estero, FL/Northfield Mount Hermon) has been selected the 2019 Northeast Women's Hockey League's Player of the Year.

The award was announced by the league on Friday, March 1, from its conference office in Syracuse, N.Y. The honor is voted upon by the head coaches of the NEWHL.

This marks the second straight year that a Plattsburgh player has garnered the conference's highest honor. During the inaugural season of the NEWHL in 2018, Melissa Sheeran was selected as the Player of the Year.

The Cardinals will host the 2019 NEWHL Championship on Saturday, March 2, when they take on Cortland at 3 p.m. in Plattsburgh, N.Y., where Moriarty is expected to be a leading force.

In four games vs. the Red Dragons this season, Moriarty has been a nemesis by amassing 10 points on six goals and four assists.

She scored two goals in each of the season-opening victories for Plattsburgh – a 5-0 win on Nov. 2 and a 7-0 shutout on Nov. 3 - and tallied two more goals on Jan. 19 in a 6-1 victory at Cortland. On Jan. 18 during an 11-1 Cardinal victory, Moriarty posted three assists.

A two-time All-NEWHL First Team member, Moriarty currently is ranked second in the conference in scoring with 34 points on 15 goals and 19 assists. She is tied for second in total assists, and in goals scored, while her +29 plus/minus rating has her tied for fourth in the league.
