Oswego’s Kate Randazzo named NEWHL Scholar Athlete of the Year

SYRACUSE, NY – Oswego sophomore defender Kate Randazzo (Ancaster, Onario, Canada/Burlington Barracuas) has been selected the inaugural Northeast Women's Hockey League Scholar Athlete of the Year.

The NEWHL announced the honor on Wednesday, April 4, from its league office in Syracuse, N.Y.

The Scholar Athlete of the Year award is nominated and voted upon by the athletic communication directors from the NEWHL and is based on a combination of success in the classroom and in the arena of competition.

A biology major with a 3.95 grade point average, Randazzo was awarded the inaugural NEWHL Elite Academic Award for boasting the highest grade point average among all participating student-athletes at the 2018 NEWHL Championship game.

As a defender, Randazzo had the second-most points for Oswego with 19 on five goals and 14 assists. She tied for ninth in scoring in the conference while she also tied for second among defensive players in both points and assists. Her 14 assists placed her in a tie for seventh overall in the NEWHL.

Randazzo boasted a stellar plus/minus rating at +14 – tied for 12th overall in the NEWHL – and was the only player not representing Plattsburgh that was present in the Top 15 in the league. Plattsburgh had 14 of the 15 best plus/minus players in the NEWHL with Randazzo the lone player from the remaining four league teams to crack that elite group.

Randazzo's outstanding sophomore season led to an All-Conference First Team selection, while she pushed her club to an appearance in the first NEWHL Championship contest.

She chipped in with a game-winning goal and also finished third among the Lakers with 12 blocked shots.
