Lakers Shut Out Bengals in First-Ever NEWHL Game

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's ice hockey team shutout the Buffalo State Bengals, 3-0, in its first-ever NEWHL game on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Lakers improve to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference action, while the Bengals fall to 1-4 on the season and 1-2 against NEWHL teams.

Oswego notched its first goal just under 14 minutes into the first period. Senior captain Olivia Ellis passed the puck from behind the net to Eryn Stewart, who brought it in front of the net and knocked it between the Bengal goalie's legs to put the Lakers on the scoreboard. The goal was Stewart's second of the season.

With 51 seconds left in the second period, the Lakers added to their lead. Victoria Rankin cleaned up a loose puck near the net to score her first goal of the season, bringing the score to 2-0. Freshmen Emma Morisette and Leah Czerwinski each collected an assist off of Rankin's goal.

At the 10:17 mark in the third period, the Lakers tacked on their final goal. Ellis took a shot from the left side, sending the puck past the Bengal goalie into the net to give the Lakers a three-goal lead. Natalie Giglio notched her third assist of the season off of the goal.

Goalie Mariah Madrigal earned the shutout. The senior made 33 saves, tying her season-high, and played all 60 minutes in the Laker win.

Oswego continues NEWHL action on Sunday when it hosts Buffalo State again at 3 p.m. at the Marano Campus Center Arena.
