Lakers Shutout Pilgrims in Season Opener

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's ice hockey team opened the season with a 5-0 win over the New England College Pilgrims on Friday.

Oswego began its offensive assault early in the first period. Freshman Katie Mlostek got things started when she notched her first Laker goal at the 5:55 mark, assisted by Kate Randazzo. Less than a minute later, senior Monica Cramer capitalized on a power play to score her first career goal and increase the Laker lead. Randazzo was in on the action again, recording her second assist of the game, while freshman Jean-marie Padden earned an assist as well.

The Lakers took advantage of the power play again in the second period. Senior captain Olivia Ellis sent a backhand shot into the bottom left corner of the net to put Oswego up 3-0 at the 14:42 mark. Just over two minutes later, the Cramer-Randazzo combination was back at it, this time with Natalie Giglio in the mix. Cramer was able to tap the puck past the Pilgrim goalie into the net for her second goal of the night, while Randazzo and Giglio each collected an assist.

In the third period, the Lakers continued their power play dominance. Freshman Jean-marie Padden scored her first career goal to bring the score to 5-0, while Giglio assisted for the second time of the night.

The Lakers outshot the Pilgrims 58 to seven, and won 41 of 52 face-offs. Goalie Mariah Madrigal played the entire game for the Lakers, earning the shutout.

Oswego will be back in action on Saturday when it faces Castleton at 3 p.m. The game will be Oswego's Teal Game to raise awareness for ovarian cancer.
