No. 1/1 Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Cortland, 8-1, to Finish NEWHL Weekend Sweep

College Hockey Stats Box Score

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The No. 1/1 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team finished the weekend with a Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) sweep, defeating SUNY Cortland, 8-1, on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.

Plattsburgh State is ranked at No. 1 in both the USCHO.com Women's Division III Top-10 Poll and the D3hockey.com Women's Top-10 Poll.

Senior forward Kayla Meneghin (Clifton, N.J./The Gunnery) scored a hat trick and posted five points for the afternoon, while senior forward Melissa Sheeran (Schaghticoke, N.Y./Millbrook School) also had five points, scoring once and doling out four assists. The Cardinals outshot the Red Dragons, 42-18, and went 2-for-5 on the power play. Cortland converted on one of six opportunities with the extra skater.

Plattsburgh State rises to 3-0-0 overall (2-0-0 NEWHL) with the win and faces a tough test at home on Wednesday, Nov. 8, when it hosts regional rival Norwich University in a rematch of last year's NCAA Division III Tournament semifinal game. Cortland drops to 1-2-1 overall (0-2-0 NEWHL) with the loss and visits SUNY Potsdam in a NEWHL clash on Friday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m.

Meneghin scored the first goal 3:45 into the game, using assists from sophomore defenseman Hannah Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./Northern Cyclones) and freshman defenseman Erin McArdle (Macomb, Mich./Detroit Belle Tire). For McArdle, it was her first career assist. Meneghin scored again two minutes later on the power play, this time relying on helpers from Sheeran and junior forward Courtney Moriarty (Estero, Fla./Northfield Mount Hermon). Just 1:10 after that junior forward Karen Hudson (Sykesville, Md./Washington Pride) cashed in on feeds from freshman forward Abby Brush (Mount Prospect, Ill./Chicago Young Americans) and freshman defenseman Kayla Goleniak (Canton, Mich./Detroit Little Caesers), marking the first career assists for both. Junior forward Mackenzie Millen (Anchorage, Alaska/North American Hockey Academy) pushed the lead to four with 1:53 before the first intermission, using passes from Moriarty and freshman defenseman Kerri Corcoran (Rockville, Md./Washington Pride). Corcoran's assist was the first of her career.

Meneghin recorded the hat trick a mere 55 seconds into the second stanza, getting help from Sheeran and junior forward Ashley Songin (Springville, N.Y./Nichols School) on the goal. That forward line scored nearly five minutes later, as Sheeran tallied with assists going to Meneghin and Songin. Cortland erased the shutout at the 7:58 mark of the period with a power-play goal scored by junior forward Charlie Calamari that was assisted by sophomore forward Miranda Kolb. Moriarty buried her third power-play goal of the year with less than five minutes remaining in the period, with Sheeran and Kiraly each earning helpers on the marker.

Kiraly closed out scoring in the game late in the third period, relying on assists from Sheeran and Meneghin.

Junior goaltender Kassi Abbott (North Billerica, Mass./Boston Shamrocks Elite) made 17 saves in the victory, while her counterpart, sophomore goaltender Rachael Farmer, turned aside 34 shots in the loss.
